Hi,
I just read the article you were featured in and the gears started turning in my mind after learning that you helped to organize a 5k fundraiser. I would love to do this, but don’t have a clue where to start! I feel like our school falls short in the spirit and fundraising efforts, and a 5k is such a great idea and more healthy than a bake sale! We should have support, as I know many run in various races of the Fargo marathon and take part in groups like Bio Girls. Any advice that you have and would like to share I would appreciate! Thanks so much! Good luck with the ultra!
Our local elementary school does this annually and we always have a great turn out! Getting a committee together would be the first step. It takes a few months to get all of the planning done. All cities are different, so you would have to find out whether or not you need to get a permit or permission. Our 5K begins and ends at the school so it is a perfect place for the venue. Then we use the nearby trails and residential streets. You can use mapmyrun to map out the course (it doesn’t need to be perfect unless you want it to be USATF certified (but there is no need to get that much involved). Someone should be in charge of gathering all of the volunteers (we used the local running club, parents at the school and a local unviversity). You will need to hire a timing company and probably get some shirts so you need to make to charge enough to make it worth it (and consider the cost of awards… depending on how many you want to give out). We were able to get food contributions from local places so that wasn’t a cost issue. We also did a raffle at the end of a race (with items donated from local businesses) as another means of getting money. Anyway, that is just the basics so feel free to contact me with specific questions: heidi@inspiredmiles.com. I think it would be great if you could do it at your school!
